Career Roadmap

Milestone 3 Promote:Develop Your Brand

In order to succeed in the job-searching process, you must have an effective resume. A resume provides a potential employer with a summary of your skills, experiences, academic endeavors, certifications, research opportunities, and extracurricular experiences.

RESUME AND CV DEVELOPMENT

In order to succeed in the job-searching process, you must have an effective resume. A resume provides a potential employer with a summary of your skills, experiences, academic endeavors, certifications, research opportunities, and extracurricular experiences. Most employers spend less than 10 seconds analyzing the resume of a potential candidate. Therefore, it is essential that you have a concise, yet descriptive resume. In addition, it must be both easy to read and interpret. Your goal is to advance to the next step in the job search process – the interview.

Difference between Resume and Curriculum Vitae (CV):

A resume is a document that reflects your education, skills and experience related to a specific position you are targeting. Resumes are typically 1-2 pages in length depending on the amount of work experience you possess. They are most commonly used to apply for jobs and internships. Resumes should be tailored to specific roles to best communicate your specific qualifications.

A CV is a detailed overview of your accomplishments, particularly as they relate to academia. They are used most commonly to pursue roles in academia or research. Typically graduate students will develop their first CV, but this document should be regularly updated across the span of your career to reflect your accomplishments. It may initially start out as only 1-2 pages but could more than triple in length as you move much further along in your career.
