These conversations are aimed at helping students understand the reciprocal connection between their academic pursuits and the skills and experiences gained through their employment. In short, this program emphasizes learning beneficial to both the work and class environments. Establishing this connection in the minds of students will make both academic and employment experiences more impactful. Visit our Spartan Ready page for more information.

- Federal Work-Study provides subsidized part-time employment for students with financial need. Students must apply for financial aid and receive a Federal Work-Study award from the Office of Student Financial Aid in order to work under this program. International students with an F-1 or J-1 Visa are not eligible, but are still eligible to work on-campus in regular departmental student positions.
- FWS students can work up to 20 work hours per week during the fall and spring semesters, never during scheduled class time or over the summer. Hours must not ever be worked during scheduled class time.
- Student positions cannot replace university employee positions.
- Students may not hold more than one (1) FWS position, but can hold 1 hourly and 1 FWS position.
- Students cannot earn more than ½ of their FWS award per semester. Unearned awarded funds may rollover to Spring semester.
- Student’s I-9 must be completed before the first day of work.
- FWS hires require the supervisor process an FWS action form. Action forms should be submitted via email to seo@uncg.edu. Non-FWS hires require an EPAF
- Action forms are due by the 25th of the month to be entered into next month’s payroll cycle. If an action form is submitted with errors or after the deadline, processing will be delayed one payroll cycle.
- If a student is not eligible for Federal Work Study they can be hired as a departmental hourly student employee. Departmental hourly student employees are paid out of department funds. A student can be hired as both a departmental hourly student and a Federal Work Study student.
- Departmental paid students can work up to 28 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters, and possibly more hours in the summer. Hours must not ever be worked during scheduled class time.
- Student positions cannot replace university employee positions.
- Students may hold multiple hourly positions, but only one FWS position.
