As an international student, there are many career options available to you after graduation. The Career & Professional Development is here to help you succeed in whatever path you choose. We encourage you to schedule an appointment with one of our career coaches to explore how to effectively achieve your short- and long-term career goals. We are also pleased to partner with the International Programs Center. Please check Handshake for upcoming workshops related to career development and the job search.
To begin your career development plan, we recommend the following:
Choose Your Post-Degree Goal
Depending on your personal and professional goals, you may decide to pursue another degree, conduct a job search in the U.S., or seek to return to your home country to begin your career. Each path requires different steps and it takes time to prepare to take the appropriate actions. Be sure to start early!
Develop Your Pitch
It’s important that you learn how to talk about your international status and highlight your global experience. Even if you plan to return to your home country, you can still make important connections and build your professional network while you are studying at UNCG. By effectively describing your unique story, skills, and goals, you can make the most of your time here in the U.S.
Know Your Visa Regulations
You will need to know your visa status while studying at UNCG as well as the visa regulations of countries that you may consider for future work. Consult with the International Programs Center to understand the parameters of your student visa, and what type of work that affords you. You can also explore countries that may be visa-friendly for post-degree employment opportunities. For instance, many students on an F1 visa are eligible for Curricular Practical Training which would allow you to gain U.S. work experience as an intern.
If you choose to remain in the U.S. for employment, your international status can be a positive asset to illustrate your global experience and perspective. Refer to the Career Roadmap for additional suggestions in developing your professional brand.
